“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has laid His life down for us, His sheep. He is responsible for the sheep because we cannot take care of ourselves. The sheep need the shepherd for protection and guidance.
The hired man is not a shepherd. He does not care as deeply for the sheep as the shepherd, because he is doing it for money or other motives. So, he goes into self preservation rather than protection mode when the wolf comes.
The Good Shepherd knows His sheep and His sheep know Him. This means that they have a relationship. Like a father would sacrifice himself for his child, so the shepherd would do anything in his power to protect his sheep.
What Jesus is saying is that we can trust His character, He does not have ulterior motives or hidden agendas when it comes to wanting to guide and protect us.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd because:
Jesus cares for all the sheep.
Jesus is fully and totally commitment to the sheep.
Jesus laid down His life for the sheep. He died for US!
Jesus was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sheep.
Jesus is fully committed to us because He bought us with a price. We can trust this Shepherd because He is Good.
