But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14 (KJV)
The final words Jesus uttered while he was on the cross, often referred to as the “passion narrative” are very significant. As Jesus approached the final hours prior to His death on Calvary, one of the things He said was, “I thirst” (John 19:28).
This reminds us that although Jesus was 100% divine, He was also 100% human. As a man, He knew what it was like to get tired, to be cold, to sweat, to be hungry, and, of course, to be thirsty. So, we know that He understands the daily struggles we go through in life. As we are reminded in Hebrews 4:15-16, we have a high priest who is able to empathize with our weaknesses, because like us, he has been tempted in every way.
But Jesus went further, he provided us with “living water” because he knows that earthly water can only satisfy us for a short time, but if we drink of this everlasting spring through His Word and His Spirit, we will always be satisfied and completely fulfilled.
If we put our trust in God, He can quench every physical, spiritual or emotional thirst we encounter. This was all made possible through the pain Jesus bore on the cross.
